Dance little fairy, Dance…. The perfect gift for the little ballerina in your life
When I was a little girl, there was something special about having a music box that I could keep all of my little trinkets in. Winding up the box using a key at the back and then opening it to hear the sweetest sounds, whilst a little ballerina (or fairy as I used to call her🧚🏾♀️) twirled around as if she could feel the music through her little wooden soul 🎶
One day though, I started to wonder why this box that I loved so much, had a little fairy in it that didn’t look like me. Did all fairies have blonde hair, dainty little noses and the clearest blue eyes? Or was it only my special fairy that looked like that? Maybe little black girls just didn’t become fairies. Maybe this was a well known fact that I just didn’t know. But that didn’t stop me from wondering or from wishing that I could be that little fairy and dance to the music so elegantly.
The truth is that not all fairies or ballerina’s to call them by their actual name (I am now a grown up after all 😂) do look like the one I had in my little music box. They can come in all colours and all shades – but only if a company sees fit to make a product that is reflective of little girls like the one I was.
So imagine my extreme joy (it’s the little things that get me excited 🤷🏾♀️) when I discovered Nia Ballerina 😯🙌🏾 a company that makes Black dolls, backpacks AND said music boxes with a little, BLACK 🖤ballerina inside, that dances her heart away to a wistful tune, whilst keeping all those special trinkets safe. Not to mention that all the music boxes have a cute picture of a little Black girl on the front of them (see picture for just how cute she is😍)
This discovery was revolutionary for me and so well timed. I was on the search for a birthday present for a little girl and I wanted a present that supported the notion that she can be anything that she wants to be. So I didn’t hesitate for even a second! I chose one of Nia Ballerina’s boxes and purchased it!
What I could not have prepared myself for (but surely hoped it would be the case) was that the box would be even better in person than it looked on the website. For the amazing price that you can get one of these boxes for, I really didn’t expect it to be so well made. But I am glad to report, that I was pleasantly surprised.
Not only did I receive the box in under a week (amazing considering we are in the midst of a pandemic that has meant my post man/woman is a sporadic visitor – understandably of course) but it was also packaged so well it seemed a shame to open it and snap a picture. But needs must 😂 I knew I couldn’t write this review and rave about this majestic little box without showing you all a picture of it – for all you know it could have been a cardboard box that I had exaggerated 🤷🏾♀️😂 – it’s not of course!
In the spirit of being fair, my only improvement point would be for Nia Ballerina to include some images on their products that diversify what little Black girls look like. When I say that, I simply mean having a little girl that has locs or cornrows as well as the quintessential afro puff. I think adding those different options would make the products even more appealing to people. Also, I envision a little girl with locs in my future one day so I might be saying that from a personal vested interest 😂
Overall, Nia Ballerina provided me with a lovely present for a lovely little girl. But as a company, it also restored the faith in me – or rather the faith of the little girl I once was – that I can be all I want to be and fairies or ballerina’s can look like me and dance their little hearts away to the sweet music that sometimes accompanies life.
So if you’re looking for a gift for a little girl that represents them and all their melanin beauty wholeheartedly, then Nia Ballerina is the place to check out.
